Boxee 0.9.22 Boxee allows you, the
developer, to create
applications to extend its
content and functionality.
Whether it�s local or web-

that in mind we�ve put
together this document to
help you get started building
apps for boxee. If you�ve got

Applications can be
downloaded and installed from
the Boxee Applications
Directory or from 3rd party
repositories using the Boxee
client from the App Box
menu. Application Types * Boxee Feeds - Boxee supports vieweing of RSS documents that are generated either statically or dynamically by a web server. This type of application provides limited functionality of lists of items. For a richer experience, please consider using Boxee Applications (see below). Please read the specification of the recommended Boxee RSS format. * Boxee Applications - Boxee Applications enables developers to build their own content portals and media applications on top of the Boxee platform. Example of Boxee Applications include: Pandora, Netflix, CNN, BBC iPlayer, and more. Applications are developed using a set of APIs in Python and GUI XMLs. Learn how to write your own application by following our first Building Your First Boxee App post. * XBMC Plugins - Plugins are written in Python and are executed by the Boxee client at run-time. They allow showing lists of content, similar to RSS, with the main difference that they are dynamically generated by the client. Boxee has not made any modifications to the XBMC Plugins, therefore for documentation of how to write plugins, please visit the following sources: 1. Plugin Creation Tutorial by Voinage 2. A handful of sample plugins 3. Python documentation of the XBMC APIs Application Descriptor Each application in the App Box must have a descriptor file that provides meta data information about the application. * Boxee application descriptor file format Packaging Applications Boxee applications are packaged in ZIP files. The ZIP file must include the application descriptor file called �descriptor.xml� at the root. GUI Applications should include all skin files and python files. Plugins should also include the file �default.py� and any other addtional Python and/or resource files. The ZIP file must be called -.zip. For example: hulu-1.12.zip which means that the application is called �hulu� with version number �1.12″. The application id and version number must match the information in the descriptor file. Submitting Applications to Boxee Submitting applications to Boxee is currently done via e-mail to app-submit AT boxee d0t tv. Boxee has the right to refuse adding applications to the Boxee Applications Directory if they do not meet the Terms of Use. Boxee will review the submitted applications and once it is approved, it will be added to the Boxee App Directory and an e-mail response will be sent to the application developer. At this time, the Boxee API is open to the general public. However, in the future a developer key may be required to access certain portions of the code. As those features are added, the documentation will be updated and clear instructions on the registration process will be posted here. For now, registration is only required for commenting in our forums. Building your own App repository You may decide not to submit the applications to Boxee and rather store them in your own repository. Users may add the repository from the App Box menu. Applications from that repository will be then be added to New Apps in the App Box.. |
